NBCApr.13.2018"FDA acts to pull concentrated caffeine from market" Maggie FoxThis article is about the FDA’s new restriction that they put in place. This restriction is to prevent stores from selling bulk packages of caffeine in powder form to the public. This restriction was put in place after 3 teens have died due to overdosing on this highly concentrated caffeine powder.
The FDA has previously stated that powdered caffeine is dangerous due to the ability to overdose on the powder in small quantities. They have also specifically asked sellers to stop distributing powder to the general public, but to no prevail. Many distributors are still at large selling massive quantities, of powder, to the general public marketed as dietary supplements. This powdered caffeine is a concentrated and deadly “dietary supplement”, as much as a teaspoon can be compared to 20 cups of coffee. Many customers do not know the potential dangers of the powdered caffeine, “dietary supplement”. Overdosing on powdered caffeine can lead to potentially deadly side effects including rapid or dangerously erratic heartbeat, seizures and death. This event is taking place all over the USA and has been and will be a problem for years to come. This event occurs due to the previously mentioned, lacking restrictions on the powdered caffeine substance. I personally do not understand why people would want to purchase powdered caffeine when the side effects are quite unpleasant. People may not know of the dangers when they purchase this so called “dietary supplement”, but seeing as many young adults and teens are becoming more health conscious it is surprising to me that they would at least look into what they are putting into their system. I also really interested by how it has taken so long for the FDA to take action on this.

The San Diego Union-TribuneMarch 10, 2018"FIRST robot competition sees first all-girls San Diego team"By: Greg Moran
This article is about the first all girls team from san diego to participate in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) along with the other 65 teams there with them. FRC is an international competition where teams of high school students have 6 weeks to design and build a robot for that year's challenges. This san diego competition also known as a regional is one of the largest ones besides worlds that is held in texas and illinoi. This region was held at the del mar fairgrounds and took play march 8th to the 10th. Many teams from all over southern California, Texas, Hawaii, the Netherlands, and even Chile participated. There upwards of 120 official events every year, there are unofficial events where teams can enjoy again the wonders of competing even when it's not the season. This article focuses on the first all girls team to participate in the san diego regional. As a first year team, or what is more commonly called a rookie team they won the award for Rookie All Star. This award is only given to first year teams that showed that they have skill and they even though they may not have done the best, they tried and build a working robot. The previous team to receive this award in san diego was the Alpha Knights from san marcos high. This regional attracts many world famous teams like The Holy Cows from High Tech High in Point Loma or The Wolverines of Los Angeles, both of witch are in the FRC hall of fame for their great achievements or feats of engineering. Much like a sport team FRC teams have a team name, number, mascot, theme, and sometimes there own motos. It is a sport to us in it, we give it our all and enjoy every second of it. FIRST is an organisations whose name is an acronym standing For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, it was founded in 1992 and continues to today. FIRST has expanded from being a small organization encouraging STEM to being world renowned. FIRST has three types of competitions FLL (FIRST Lego League), FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge), and FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) all three of these are based on the same values. The people who participate in these kind of events live my two main values Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition, this means that it embraces friendly competition but also respect for others along with working together. I personally think that FRC is amazing. “It's the hardest fun you will ever have” ~ Dean Kamen (founder of FIRST) is the only way to describe it do others. Once you are in it, you don't see how others aren't. A team is more than just friends or teammates, is a second family. You meet people you normally would never have met. I can personally attest to this, from being in FRC i have met so many people and create lasting friendships and i look forwards to when i get to see them again. There is no way to describe how much this is important to me, besides that by the end the robot you just helped build is like your baby, you put your heart and soul into it. People are amazed when i say “I did the electrical on this” and go into explaining how everything works, they love the fact that high schoolers have the opportunity to do something like this and that we have a passion for it. “FIRST is more than robots” ~ Dean Kamen. There is no way to say how important this is to me, is my love, my life, my joy. There is no way of keeping me from it. People may call me crazy for spending 6 weeks day and night building and designing a robot, but there is no way to explain it to someone who is not willing to have an open mind about this. I will be commenting on Paola and Mau blogs. CNN"What's sending mysterious repeating fast radio bursts in space?"10 January, 2018By: Ashley Strickland This article is about a mysterious repeating fast radio burst, in fact the only repeating fast radio burst. This radio burst has been given the name of FRB 121102. It was first detected in 2012 and it sporadically repeats. They do know know the physical location of the radio bursts origin. This wave only lasts about a millisecond but gives off a massive amount of energy, comparable to what our sun would release in an entire day.
This radio blast is not normal, it is the only radio wave that repeats and they way it does it adds to the oddity of it. FRB has been seen since 2012 but not much is know about it. It only lasts about a millisecond but produces a massive amount of energy with it. We have been using new technology to study it ever day and we are always learning about this. We discovered a dwarf galaxy about 300 light years away by following where the radio wave was coming from. We are not able to find the physical location only the galaxy where it comes. Who knows how many more places we could find by looking into radio waves that come from space. The location of where the radio signal comes from but it is from space can be traced back to a dwarf galaxy 3 billion light years away. It is unsure for how long this has been happening but the first time it was observed was in 2012, it happens randomly but it always has the same frequencies. The reason for why this event happened is unknown, but the reason for why it keeps happening is more unknown. The reason for why this is a current event even though it started a long time ago is that more satellites are coming online every day and adding to the list of areas we can get data from. With this new data coming we will be able to learn more about the history of the universe. If we can learn from what it is “telling” us then who know what we could fine. Many of the reasons people think this radio blast happened is because of what is called the Faraday rotation. That happened when radio waves go through magnetic fields and become twisted. The larger magnetic field the greater twist. This radio blast happens to have one of the largest twists in. There are only a few ways this could be but the main one is that it is close to a massive black hole. This seems unlikely due to it coming from a dwarf galaxy so the other way this could be it that it is within a powerful nebula. I think this radio blast is interesting because we don't know much about it. The way that it sporadically repeats adds to the mystery about it, I think that if we knew more about it we would not spend time looking for it. If we do find how its made or where ever it could lead to new technology that would change the world. It could also lead us to other intelligent life form other than us that that is kinda terrifying. will comment on Linnea and Max blog posts. |
